In the consortium project “Serial Refurbishment”, the CBI, together with Echterhoff, Frauenrath, Leviat and Nesseler, is working on a systematic basic investigation of the serial refurbishment approach. From the scientific side, the project is supported by the Institute of Steel Construction at RWTH University and the Institute of Structural Concrete at RWTH University.

In the first phase of the project, a common starting point for working on the topic is to be developed on the basis of a basic evaluation with a technical feasibility analysis and an analysis of the market in Germany. This also involves determining the boundary conditions, such as the legal framework, energy requirements and funding opportunities. The contents will be closely coordinated with the consortium.

The overall concept of serial refurbishment, as it has been politically envisaged as a holistic approach so far, is also to be examined and evaluated from the point of view of economic aspects, especially from the perspective of the companies involved in the project. Technical and structural planning issues, such as the possible module weight or dimensions of the prefabricated renovation elements, are also to be considered. The “BuildingHeat” project and the Collaborative Research Centre SFB 524 “Materials and Constructions for the Revitalisation of Buildings” are to be taken into account in the basic investigation. A digital measurement is to be assumed as a basic requirement.

The following fundamental questions need to be clarified:

  • What is serial renovation and what are the current framework conditions for it?
  • Is the path that has been taken politically so far the right one? Is there a basis for a serial building concept?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of a holistic approach?
  • What are the technical requirements (energy, static)?
