CBI

Getting to Market

Innovations and their implementation are often lengthy processes in the construction industry. Standardization and approval processes additionally hinder the transfer from the laboratory to the construction site. Especially in structural engineering and transport infrastructure construction, the “tried and tested” is often relied on.
Together with industry, the Center Building and Infrastructure Engineering (CBI) aims to exploit trends and implement innovations and technology transfers more efficiently and quickly. The basis for this is a faster transfer into regulations and approvals.

Key topics

The focus of the cooperation between the members and the CBI is on a wide variety of topics from the fields of building construction, bridge construction, road construction and digitalization, with due consideration of sustainability.
In the field of building construction, the current topics of the CBI’s consortial research include modular construction, in particular standardization and sustainability assessment, as well as large-scale fire tests of room cells and connection techniques of reinforced precast concrete elements, and the optimization of sandwich facades with non-metallic reinforcement.

In the area of bridge construction, work is underway on a practical guide for modular bridge construction.

Current topics in the area of roads and infrastructure include continuously reinforced concrete pavement in combination with PU asphalt, detection of microplastics in streetcar markings, energy generation and sustainability assessment of infrastructure, and congestion avoidance to reduce CO2 emissions.

What makes the CBI unique?

By bundling the competences of construction research, solid construction, steel construction and road engineering and the connection to the ecosystem of the RWTH Aachen Campus, the CBI offers the ideal prerequisite for developing, researching and, above all, implementing new ideas for structural engineering and transport infrastructure construction as quickly as possible in close cooperation with its members. To this end, the CBI makes use of its excellent contacts to authorities in order to incorporate their requirements directly into the development phase.
