Particularly in times of steadily increasing demand for living space, the importance of modular construction, which is both sustainable and price-optimized, is growing all the time. Here, modular construction is defined as the use of space cells. Nowadays, questions about the necessary structural engineering proofs, especially fire protection, in concrete projects are increasingly coming up. Up to now, uncertainties and unclarified questions in connection with building regulations requirements for building products or types of construction from modular construction have been given to a considerable extent.

Within the framework of this consortium project, a practical guide is being developed which distinguishes between three types of space cells: sea freight containers, containers (externally visible steel frames) and space modules (externally clad) and is intended to show the possibilities of providing evidence of fire protection properties of modular buildings in steel frame construction.

As external consultant, the Ministry for Regional Identity, Communities and Local Government, Building and Gender Equality of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia (MHKBG NRW) is also part of the consortium.

Currently, the standardization of construction details is being worked on together. For this purpose, design features reduced to fire protection and based on their details are currently being developed together with the manufacturers on the basis of the model timber construction guideline.
With the aim of achieving acceptance among experts, these are currently being discussed with a wide range of experts and adapted accordingly. In the future, these could be incorporated into a possible “model modular construction guideline”.
