High performance and functionality of the transport infrastructure is of decisive importance for Germany as a business location, especially in times of constantly growing passenger and freight traffic. An important contribution to this is to be made by this consortium project, in which new strategies and methods for sustainable bridge constructions in modular design are to be developed. In total, there are about 130,000 bridges within the German infrastructure network. The majority of these bridges will be affected by renovation or new construction in the short to medium term. The extensive renovation work required to repair the damage or the necessary replacement structures, in conjunction with the associated traffic disruptions, make the development of new methods for sustainable bridge construction a relevant topic for the overall economy. The focus is on composite construction methods.

In the first project phase, opportunities and risks for the planning and implementation of modular bridges were investigated. Currently a draft for a modular bridge system is being developed. This will then be discussed with the relevant authorities and subsequently implemented as a demonstration object if necessary.

The project was successfully completed. Click here to go to the follow-up project “Planing Guide to Modular Bridge Construction”.

Both the Federal Highway Research Institute and Straßen.NRW are part of the consortium as external consultants.
