Did you know that about half of all German residential buildings will have to be renovated in the next 20 years? The background to this is the German government’s plan to make the building stock climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this, new renovation methods are needed that are cheaper and faster to implement. Serial refurbishment is the most promising approach: similar to prefabricated building construction, refurbishment modules are largely prefabricated in the factory and only need to be assembled on site. In this way, a building can receive a new building envelope including new windows, doors and insulation within a few days, which is simply mounted in front of the existing building envelope. The Netherlands are pioneers and have already renovated several thousand buildings in series – the concept works!
